John began studying the art of knot tying almost 20 years ago. He found the beauty, utility, and mind–hands connection of this skill mesmerizing. Before steamships, containerization, ratcheting tie-downs, bungee cords, and similar modern tools, knot tying was an essential everyday skill for farmers, sailors, bakers, butchers, mule drivers, and many others, helping them solve everyday challenges at work and at home. The practical and satisfying skill of knot tying connects us to a long tradition of craftsmanship and problem-solving—skills that are not only historically fascinating but also incredibly useful in modern life, whether for camping, fishing, home projects, or everyday tasks.
John was raised and has lived most of his adult life in Southern Connecticut. His other interests and skills include cooking, computers, electronics, piano playing, and reading both fiction and nonfiction.
