Summer Learning Academy (Grades 7-8)
IAR Reading, Writing & Mathematics Workshop
This invitation-only summer program is to provide students with extra instruction to reinforce skills and concepts in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. Students may be registered for one or both content areas based on school recommendations. Session 1: Mission To Mars (Entering Grade 7 or Grade 8) - Blast off into an unforgettable summer with our Mission to Mars program! Designed as an extension to school year programming, curious 7th and 8th graders will hone their reading, writing, math, and science skills as they explore the science behind space exploration, discover the thrilling race for dominance in space during the Cold War, and dive into captivating stories of astronauts and pioneers. Get ready for hands-on projects, interactive lessons, and out-of-this-world fun as you prepare for the ultimate mission! Session 2: The Science Behind Pixar (Entering Grade 7 or Grade 8) - This course is designed to offer accelerated learning opportunities in science, math, reading, and writing through the exciting world of movie creation and design! Using student-centered learning, students will engage in hands-on activities to strengthen key skills that are essential for success at their grade level while exploring what it takes to make a Pixar movie! Through collaborative work in small groups, students will deepen their understanding of core subjects while building confidence in their abilities to tackle content-specific challenges. Our two-week program culminates with a field trip to the CT Science Center to explore their new exhibit “The Science Behind Pixar.” The cost of the trip is included in the program. These programs are only for students entering Grade 7 or 8 8:15 AM - 11:30 AM Given that this program meets only for a short period of time and does not involve homework, students MUST attend the program each day and be on time. Parents/Guardians are responsible for arranging transportation to and from the school each day during the program. Admission to the program is based on principal, specialist, and teacher recommendations. Childcare is available through the EXCL Summer Camp for students entering grade 7 or 8 ONLY! Please contact the EXCL office at (860) 404-0112 for more information about childcare. No student is denied the opportunity to participate in this program due to financial constraints. Please contact Lauren Lavecchia at lavecchial@fpsct.org for financial assistance.
