"MOEMS is one of the most influential and fun-filled math competition programs in the United States and throughout the world. More than 120,000 students from every state and 39 additional countries participate each year. The objectives of MOEMS are to teach multiple strategies for out-of-the-box problem solving, develop mathematical flexibility in solving those problems, and foster mathematical creativity and ingenuity. MOEMS was established in 1979... (https://moems.org)"Farmington Continuing Education is happy to provide twice the number of registration positions for one of West Woods' most popular programs. It is important to acknowledge that this program is a math competition, it is not a math workshop or opportunity for additional help with math that is part of the school day. FIRST® LEGO® League - DISCOVER (Gr. K)
FIRST LEGO League
Designed for children in Kindergarten, DISCOVER teams focus on the basics of STEM and building as they are introduced to real world problems. "Grab your gear, pack your magnifying glass, rope, and pickaxe - the adventure begins! In this season of FIRST®LEGO®League UNEARTHED™, you and your team will follow the traces of the past: uncover hidden treasures, mysterious artifacts, and forgotten stories. But your mission doesn't end with the discovery, that's just the beginning!" PARENT COACHES are needed to help assist teams. If you are interested, please email the FIRST LEGO League Program Manager, Tuhan Nguyen at nguyent@fpsct.org, and our Enrichment Supervisor at CONTINUINGED@FPSCT.ORG, for more information. *This program is not possible without Parent Coaches. FIRST® LEGO® League - EXPLORE (Gr. 1-4)
FIRST LEGO League
Designed for children in grades 1-4, EXPLORE teams focus on the fundamentals of engineering as they explore real-world problems, learn to design and code, and create unique solutions made with LEGO® bricks and powered by LEGO® SPIKE®. NEW THIS YEAR, FIRST® and LEGO® have phased in the SPIKE®, a new motor hub designed to perform significantly better than the now-obsolete EV3®. "Grab your gear, pack your magnifying glass, rope, and pickaxe - the adventure begins! In this season of FIRST® LEGO® League UNEARTHED™, you and your team will follow the traces of the past: uncover hidden treasures, mysterious artifacts, and forgotten stories. But your mission doesn't end with the discovery, that's just the beginning!" Students will investigate a challenge related to a real-world theme, designing and building their solution as a group. Using LEGO® Education SPIKE® they will learn to code their team model to move and be interactive using sensors. Students will work together to solve fun engineering challenges and build models using LEGO® bricks, gaining habits of learning, confidence, and teamwork skills along the way. Students will think and behave like designers and engineers, developing their ability to observe, question, gather information, and ask more questions. PARENT COACHES are needed to help assist teams. If you are interested, please email the FIRST LEGO League Program Manager Tuhan Nguyen at nguyent@fpsct.org, and our Enrichment Supervisor Kevin Riendeau at riendeauk@fpsct.org for more information. *This program is not possible without Parent Coaches.
