Reading, Writing & Mathematics Workshop (Grades 7 and 8)

Summer 2024 (YOUTH Only)

This invitation-only summer program is to provide students with extra instruction to reinforce skills and concepts in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. Students may be registered for one or both content areas based on school recommendations.

Reading and Writing: Students will participate in diverse and engaging reading and writing experiences that will provide skill development. This workshop will also address Farmington’s Vision of the Global Citizen skills, as students will develop critical thinking and reasoning skills by reading, discussing, and analyzing fiction and non-fiction texts. Collaboration with partners and small groups of peers will enable students to develop communication skills through speaking and writing. The Reading and Writing Workshop is an opportunity for students to work with peers to continue to develop and refine essential literacy skills.

Mathematics: Students will engage in activities that address and develop a variety of essential mathematics skills. Students will be problem-solvers in this workshop, partnering with peers to take on mathematical challenges that will develop skills related to number sense. Critical thinking skills will be put to use as students deepen their understanding of expressions and equations as well as the nuances of ratio and proportional relationships. Collaboration with peers in small groups will provide opportunities for students to develop a deeper understanding of geometry while having fun.

For students entering Grade 7 or 8:

  • Reading, Writing & Mathematics: 8:15 AM - 11:30 AM

  • Given that this program meets only for a short period of time and does not involve homework, students MUST attend the program each day and be on time. 
  • Parents/Guardians are responsible for arranging transportation to and from the school each day during the program. Admission to the program is based on principal, specialist, and teacher recommendations.
  • Childcare is available through the EXCL Summer Camp for students entering grade 7 or 8 ONLYPlease contact the EXCL office at (860) 404-0112 for more information about childcare.
