Explore the rich history of baseball from its 19th-century origins through the rise of Sunday Baseball and the sport’s evolution in the early to mid-20th century. Each session builds on the last, creating a continuous narrative of baseball’s growth and cultural impact. Led by Alan Cohen, a baseball historian and long-time member of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), participants will gain insights from his extensive work, including over 60 biographies, 70 game stories, 40 essays, and presentations at SABR conventions and other baseball conferences. Perfect for enthusiasts eager to understand the game beyond the field.

Alan Cohen

Instructor

Alan Cohen is a baseball historian. Since 2011, he has been a member of the Society for American Baseball Research. He has written 60 biographies, 70 game stories, and 40 essays that have appeared on the SABR website as well as in more than 80 baseball-related publications. He has given presentations at SABR conventions since 2012 as well as other baseball conferences, ranging from the 19th century conference to the Negro League Conference to the Nine Conference. He currently serves as the chairperson of the SABR Bio-Project fact-checking team and works with Retrosheet's Negro League project. He has been the stringer (milb datacaster) for the Hartford Yard Goats since 2013 and has served as an officer in the Connecticut SABR chapter since 2015.
